Frame materials – who knew?

There are a lot of different frames out there, made from very different materials, how do I know what is right for me?

Here is what you need to know:

There are two main material categories: Plastic and Metal, however there are several sub-categories.

Plastic:

Acetate (Cellulose Acetate, Zyl) – hypoallergenic, made from natural materials, can be made in very colorful options, this is for you if you want something funky!

TR90 – flexible, ultra-durable and temperature resistant, great option for people who are hard on their glasses, like kids! Warning – this material is not adjustable, make sure the frame fits.

Nylon – extra durable, temperature resistant, this is a great option for sporty frames! Warning – this material is not adjustable, make sure the frame fits.

Metal:

Stainless steel – strong and fairly light weight, often less expensive, this is a classic, can’t go wrong with a classic!

Titanium – strong, durable, and lightweight, hypo allergenic, these frames can be a bit more expensive, but they are worth every penny!

Gold/Silver/Platinum – hypo allergenic, these are great if you want a “barely there” classy frame!

Memory metal – flexible and ultra-durable, great option for people who are hard on their glasses, like kids! Warning – this material is not adjustable, make sure the frame fits.

When picking your frame you should not just consider the price and style, but also the fit and comfort. Most people wear their frames all day every day, so how they feel and function really matters.

While plastic frames tend to be more popular due to the many style and color options, metal may be a better option depending on your needs. An important part to consider is the nose pads, typically only metal frames have nose pads. Some people prefer to wear a frame without nose pads and some prefer with, keep in mind that the frame becomes more adjustable to your face with the nose pads. So, if the bridge of your nose doesn’t fit the average plastic frame, consider a metal frame with nose pads for a better fit.

The right frame will look like a million bucks, feel like a warm hug, and last a long time!
