What is Myopia Management & Why Is It Important?

If your child has been squinting at the whiteboard or holding their tablet just inches from their face, it might be time to schedule a pediatric eye exam. Nearsightedness (clinically known as myopia) is one of the most common vision conditions in children today, and it’s becoming more prevalent with each generation. But here’s what many parents don’t realize: there’s a difference between simply correcting myopia with glasses and actually managing it.

In this blog, we’ll discuss what myopia management is and how it can help your child see clearly now and in the future.

What is myopia management?

Myopia management refers to a set of evidence-based treatments designed to slow the progression of nearsightedness in children and teens. Standard glasses or contact lenses don’t do anything to slow how quickly the eye is elongating, which is the underlying cause of worsening myopia.

Myopia management addresses that root issue. The goal isn’t just clearer vision today; it’s protecting your child’s long-term eye health.

Why progression matters more than people think

Many parents assume that stronger prescriptions are just part of growing up. But high myopia (typically defined as -6.00 diopters or more) significantly raises the risk of serious eye conditions later in life, including:

  • Retinal detachment
  • Glaucoma
  • Myopic maculopathy
  • Early-onset cataracts

Slowing myopia progression during childhood can reduce the likelihood of reaching those high prescription levels and, by extension, lower the risk of these complications down the road.

The treatment options available

At Peachtree Corners Eye Clinic, we offer several clinically proven approaches depending on your child’s age, lifestyle, and prescription.

Ortho-k (orthokeratology)

Ortho-k lenses are specially designed rigid contact lenses worn overnight. They gently reshape the cornea while your child sleeps, providing clear vision throughout the day—no daytime glasses or contacts needed. They’re a popular option for active kids and young athletes.

MiSight® contact lenses

MiSight® is an FDA-approved soft daily contact lens specifically designed to slow myopia progression. They’re worn during the day like regular contacts and have been shown in clinical studies to reduce progression by an average of 59% compared to standard lenses. Many children adapt to them quickly and love the freedom they offer.

Low-dose atropine eye drops

Low-dose atropine eye drops are a pharmaceutical approach, typically used once daily at bedtime. Atropine has been studied extensively for myopia control, and the low-dose formulation has shown strong results with minimal side effects. This option works well for younger children or those who aren’t ready for contact lenses.

Some children benefit from a combination of treatments, and your optometrist will work with you to find the right fit.

What to expect at a myopia management appointment

Starting myopia management is a straightforward process. During a comprehensive evaluation, we’ll measure your child’s current prescription, assess the length of their eye using specialized imaging, and review their history of prescription changes. From there, we’ll talk through treatment options and help you decide which approach makes the most sense for your family.

Ongoing monitoring is part of the process. We recommend follow-up appointments so we can track how well the treatment is working and adjust as needed.

Give your child a clearer future

Myopia management isn’t about chasing a perfect prescription number. It’s about giving your child the best possible chance at healthy vision for life. The earlier treatment begins, the more impact it can have.
