What is myopia?

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, makes distant objects look blurry while close-up objects remain clear. It usually begins in childhood and often gets worse as the eyes grow.

Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long from front to back, which causes light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. If left unmanaged, myopia can increase the risk of eye health issues later in life.

The importance of myopia control

High levels of myopia significantly increase the likelihood of developing serious eye conditions such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and myopic maculopathy. These risks can affect lifelong vision, even if your child wears glasses or contact lenses to see clearly.

Myopia control helps slow the progression of nearsightedness and may reduce your child’s risk of developing eye diseases associated with elongated eyes. Early intervention can make a lasting impact on your child’s vision and eye health.

Myopia treatment options we offer

We provide proven myopia control options tailored to your child’s lifestyle and prescription needs. Whether your child is active, prefers daily contacts, or needs nighttime vision correction, we offer safe, effective treatments that fit seamlessly into their routine.

Ortho-k with Paragon CRT® lenses

Orthokeratology, or ortho-k, uses custom-fitted lenses to gently reshape the cornea overnight. Ortho-k has been shown to slow myopia progression by 36%–50% compared to standard glasses or contact lenses.¹

Children wear Paragon CRT® lenses while sleeping and remove them in the morning for clear, glasses-free vision during the day. These lenses not only correct vision but also help slow the progression of myopia by altering how light focuses on the retina.

MiSight® 1 day contact lenses

MiSight® 1 day lenses are the first and only FDA-approved soft contact lenses proven to slow myopia progression in children ages 8–12 at the start of treatment. These daily disposable lenses provide a two-in-one benefit: they correct blurry distance vision and help slow the progression of myopia.

Backed by the longest continuous soft contact lens study for myopia control, MiSight® 1 day slowed progression by 59% over three years on average.² In addition, 41% of children wearing MiSight® had no progression at all.

Low-dose atropine eye drops

Low-dose atropine drops are a safe, effective way to slow myopia progression in children. These prescription drops are used once daily, with one drop in each eye at bedtime. Side effects are typically mild and may include slight pupil dilation, temporary light sensitivity, or brief blurred near vision.

Key benefits:

  • Proven to slow myopia progression by 40–50%, supported by ATOM1, ATOM2, and LAMP clinical studies3,4,5,6,7,8,9

  • Convenient and easy to use—typically one bottle lasts about 1.5 months

  • No refrigeration required; store in a cool, dry place

  • Formulated by Imprimis Compounding Pharmacy for quality and safety

If your child experiences increased light sensitivity or difficulty reading while using atropine drops, contact our office immediately.
